Yay! I signed up too. And it's not like I don't already have another BB due around the same time! Eeek! I do know this though. I am only going to claim a prompt if it really inspires me. I am not going in lukewarm. If I don't find a piece (or two) that seriously lights a fire in me, I won't get past the sign-up phase. But, you have to buy a ticket if you wanna play the lottery!

LOL! I'm the opposite :D

I'd rather pinch hit and roll the dice!

Oh no, I am not a gambler. As a matter of fact I rarely write from anyone else's prompts because if I don't feel it, it doesn't happen. My PL fic this year was an exception...sort of. I was writing from a prompt but the prompt was written up by a friend at my request for a totally different fest I wound up dropping out of. So, yeah, I have to really want to write a story for it to develop into something that I don't consider a POS!

My Kindle says I'm at the 25% mark of your Big Bang. I only read when I'm on the treadmill at the gym, so don't expect me to finish soon, although I wouldn't be lying if I said that I literally can't put it down. I'm looking forward to continuing at the gym tomorrow! Your fic reminds me of the movies my uncle Jim would drop me and my cousin Sharon off at when we were kids. It must have been the late 60s or early 70s. Scary horrifying movies that would have been rated R if a rating system were in place. The Mark of the Devil, Let's Scare Jessica to Death, etc... That kind of stuff wouldn't fly with little kids nowadays! Anyway, that's what your BB fic reminds me of, and I am eating it up. I'll leave you a proper comment when I finish reading.

Let's see (Elie, sorry for hijacking your LJ! <3) I did have a point.... yes- I wanted to point out that, again, I am the opposite! I haven't had a decent idea for a fic in my head ever! I need a prompt! For my BB, I read every unfilled A/M prompt on KMM and was thrilled to find several that I could work with. In the end, Maru won out. It was a real challenge since I have never written comedy before. I do agree with you that you have to want to write a story for it to develop into something decent though. There's definitely something to be said for that. The thrill of wanting to write the story certainly comes through in your BB fic.

Elie, you should sign up for Reverse BB as an artist! Put a pic of your posed action figures for someone to write a fic from. I wonder if that would be allowed? I think it would be awesome fun!

I'm still surprised anyone wanted to read my fic at all, as wrapped up in warnings as it is. (I didn't think I'd get an artist or beta to touch the thing. You can imagine my delighted surprise when I did and both of them were pinch hitting for people who dropped out on me!) So, thank you for even starting it! And thank you for the lovely compliments!

I was quite fearful that my fic would prove too dark for anyone to go near it. (The fest that prompted it was the [livejournal.com profile] dark_fest so, it was meant to be...er...dark.) I've been amazed that so many people have read it and beyond thrilled that it's been well received! (I am still in shock over it all tbh. Alby's artwork continues to mesmerize me, I have it on my desktop so I can look at it all the time ;-)

Yes, Ellie! That would be awesome!! Hee! I think they'd allow it, they allow graphic art and videos so why not artful photographs? You can still write too *puppy eyes*

My artist actually dropped out after the final check in- well after you posted in PaperPushers that your artist dropped out (but I got another one who came to my rescue). You must have been psyched with the pinch hit artist you got! That's what drew me to the fic in the first place.

LOL- one of my squeamish fandom friends just asked me if she'd like your BB story. "I see there's a baby in it. I like babies!" she said. Ummmm.... no!

Yes, Elie! Make pictures of the Arthur and Merlin figures! We promise we won't write anything too macabre!

Bwahaaahaaa! <3

[identity profile] k-nightfox.livejournal.com on September 12th, 2012 08:05 am (UTC)
Oh God, I was more than psyched with the pinch hitter I got! I was fortunate in that another really talented artist also offered to help but Alby was so enthusiastic I couldn't resist! (I was really, really in awe of who else volunteered but, like Alby, she's not only a phenomenal artist but a sweet, lovely woman as well.) Then after I said yes to Alby, another artist offered her services as well!! I was frankly overwhelmed with feelings of, "What the hell? Really?? Why??" But I wasn't about to look a gift-horse in the mouth, I just thanked whichever deity was looking out for me :D

When PL sign-ups for artists started, I looked over every entry and just kept seeing "no non-con", "no uther/merlin" and "no mpreg" and I am like, damn, thank God I already have an artist! When he was forced to drop out, I honestly thought I'd be left as a stand-alone cuz, really, who'd want to illustrate such a savage story written by a total nobody like me?

Kind and talented women!! Holy Crap! It was like winning the lottery on your birthday while the man of your dreams proposes! I was that flummoxed and touched beyond what I can describe.

As for your friend, yeah, if she's squeamish, she wouldn't get past the first warning! And that's cool, I didn't write this for the squeamish. A friend of mine who said she was getting ready to read it mentioned that mpreg squicked her and I was like, "Yah, then give my fic a pass cuz that's in there!" She had missed that warning buried amongst all the other ones. I told her that she didn't have to read my fic just because we are friends, I don't torture my friends! She decided to brave the mpreg cuz she likes dark fics. I was like, "OK but I warned you!"

(Just finished yours btw and can't stop grinning. So. Damn. Adorable!!)

I will think about it. And if I decide to go for it, there will probably be a long list of squicks accompanying it 'cause I don't think I'd survive if it ended as anything else than happy fluffy story. :D

I'm pretty sure I'll sign up for merlin holidays so I will be doing all the work for this in January. :D

I just hope it will go more smoothly than last year when my laptop died permanently with my not-backuped submission on it.
[identity profile] k-nightfox.livejournal.com on September 12th, 2012 12:10 am (UTC)
Ouch! That must have hurt like hell!
[identity profile] k-nightfox.livejournal.com on September 12th, 2012 08:23 am (UTC)
You know, last year I hovered over the last sign-up slot for merlin holidays before deciding I just wasn't a good enough writer to do that fest. I was glad I didn't take the spot because I found out the next day that my friend [livejournal.com profile] winterstorrm had come back from holiday and got the last slot for the fest. That made me happy because she can out-write me every day of the week!

Also, like I said above, I am not good at writing in response to someone else's prompts or even tailoring one to their specific kinks. I tried that once for a friend and I think that fic wound up just going into graphic-porn-overload! And really, no one needs that as a Christmas gift!!

I did do the smaller, Yuletide Exchange at merlin_challenge and yah, it was definitely not one of my better bits of writing (even the recipient didn't bother to comment on it). Heck, that fest crashed and burned and I still to this day don't know what happened to it. They only posted half the submissions. I had a story in the queue for the second half as well and they didn't post it and somehow I lost my draft of it so that story was completely lost to the ether! So I will not be signing up for merlin_holidays. I will leave that to the good writers like you to make worthy gifts for people who deserve them!
[identity profile] elirwen.livejournal.com on September 13th, 2012 09:44 am (UTC)
It kind of amuses me that you wrote a huge and awesome bb fic and then say that you're not good enough writer. But yeah, I get how you mean it. I need to like my prompts too. :)
[identity profile] k-nightfox.livejournal.com on September 13th, 2012 09:29 pm (UTC)
Aww, thanks *blushes* I think we all have huge doubts about ourselves though don't we? I mean, I am not the worst writer in the world by any means but still, I don't seem to write well for mass appeal. And merlin_holidays is kinda all about mass appeal.
[identity profile] elirwen.livejournal.com on September 13th, 2012 10:14 pm (UTC)
merlin holidays is about using some of your precious time to create something for someone just to make them happy. And yeah, you don't have to hit the exactly right spot with your writing, but that happens even to the best. You can't really get into your recipient's head, especially when you have just few lines of likes and dislikes to base your story on.

also, the way it works, the mods would never give you a prompt that would be completely out of your list of favourite stuff to write.

And why should be the minorities excluded? It's not like there's a rule that fics for merlin holidays have to be bright and happy all the way through.

When I started writing mpreg, I thought I'd be writing for a smaller group of readers and now when I look at number of hits at ao3, it's mpreg that has the highest.

Also, when I take your big bang story as an example, you had a very dark theme that was potentially very depressive, but you managed to brighten it up with love and hope. It's something not everyone can do.
[identity profile] k-nightfox.livejournal.com on September 13th, 2012 11:15 pm (UTC)
Well, I may consider doing it this year. I'll see what my other commitments look like at the time.

I just sorta still have it in the back of my head that no one is actually interested in anything I write. It still surprises me when people are!
[identity profile] inspired-being.livejournal.com on September 12th, 2012 02:16 pm (UTC)
I am contemplating signing up, especially since I've gotten back into writing regularly and I can usually work rather well with visual prompts... and even the schedule isn't that bad...
But I'm still hesitant...
[identity profile] elirwen.livejournal.com on September 13th, 2012 10:07 am (UTC)
You should give it a try. :) I was a bit freaked out last year because of the big bang in the title, but 5k isn't that much and when you choose the right prompt, the story just comes to you.
